Tourist places in Kalimpong

Deolo Hill

This is also termed as the highest point of the town of Kalimpong. Deolo Hill is located at a tremendous height of around 1700 m. Three reservoirs of fresh water accompany the hill and that play an important role in the water requirements of the town. It also offers some of the most beautiful views of surrounding valleys, rivers and villages. There is a recreational park here that offers various adventure-sports that include paragliding and horse riding and trekking etc.

Dr. Graham’s Home

Located at right at the foot of the Deolo Hills is a major centre of education in Kalimpong. Established in the 1900s by Sir Anderson Graham of England, this entire complex is spread over an area of 550 acres. This house has been named after Sir Anderson Graham and offers significant number of vocational courses in farming, baking, dairy management, clothing, medication and poultry. This is really an international institution that is sponsored by many Non-Governmental organizations from all over the world.

Kalimpong Cactus Nursery

Kalimpong Cactus Nursery is one of the rarest varieties of cactus plants and orchids. Locate don an isolated part of this town, this area is surrounded by a thick network of trees and hills. There are many tourists visiting this place because of its beautiful location and pleasant weather. Along with this, the cactus plants and orchids, this area is surrounded by scenic views of hills and exotic colourful flowers.

Zong Dog Palri Fo Brang Gompa

Tourist Places in Kalimpong

One of the ancient monasteries that you must see here is the Zong Dog Palri, which was built under the guidance of Dalai Lama in 1975. Located on the Durpin Hill, this monastery is also known as Durpin’s monastery. It is regarded as a major religious centre by followers of Buddhism and it houses close to 110 published texts on Buddhism. Here you can enjoy some great Buddhist architecture, sculptured walls, pillars and ancient painting too.

Crockety

Located at about 50 km from the town of Darjeeling, Crockety is one of the ancient British cottages that comes under the Kalimpong district. Built during the colonial rule in India, it is an architectural  marvel that is surrounded by some of the most beautiful gardens and lush green lawns. It is one of the rare areas that receive tourists throughout the year, irrespective of the seasons. In the early 1900s, Crockety house was a trade point and hub of wool merchants coming from various parts of the world. Great photography to be captured here.

  • Kali Bari is about only 2kms from Kalimpong town centre and has a huge idol of goddess Kali here. It has an open terrace with seats of concrete and offers nice view of Kalimpong town.
  • Dharmodaya Vihar is another popular tourist spot and also the residence of Nepali Buddhist monks and there is a Buddhist temple here too.
  • Along with monasteries there is also a very popular Durga Mandi here. It offers you with a lovely manicured garden and peace of mind.
  • Durpin Monastery (also known as Zang Dog Palri Monastery) is based in Durpin Dara Hill with two large cylinders on two sides and is one of the popular Buddhist monasteries here.

  • New Jalpaiguri (NJP): 73kms (2.5 hours by car)

  • Lava: 34kms (1.5 hours by car)
  • Loleygaon: 52kms (2.5 hours)
  • Rishyap: 29kms (2 hours)
  • Pedong: 20kms (1 hour)

By Rail and Road

Take overnight train from Kolkata or other major cities to New Jalpaiguri railway station. From here, you can hire a car and head to the town in about 3 hours max.

By Air

Reach the Bagdogda airport and then take a car or bus from there. It takes about 2 hours to reach Kalimpong from there.
